Ushers
::
There are
normally two ushers at the 10:15 a.m. Sunday service and comprised of either
adults, young adults and teenage youth, or a combination of each, that
perform initial greeting of arriving service attendees and distribution of
service bulletins prior to the beginning of the service. If required, more
ushers, typically up to no more than four, are utilized at large attendance
special services, i.e., Easter Sunday 10:15 a.m. service, Christmas Eve 6:00
and 11:00 p.m. services.
Ushers ring the church's main bell at a quarter till and 5 minutes prior to
the beginning of the church service they are ushering at the church's main
entrance, if appropriate (not at funerals).
The ushers accomplish the collection of the Offertory (passing the plate)
after taking the Eucharistic Wine and Host to the Altar and delivering them
to a waiting/eager acolyte to receive them at the beginning of the
Offertory. The Offertory Plates are returned to the eagerly waiting acolyte
at the altar rail during the singing of the Doxology. The ushers will remain
at the alter rail until the conclusion of the singing of the Doxology and
return to their pews.
An usher will perform a body count of the church service attendees within
the sanctuary and the church classrooms, nursery and parish hall during the
homily/sermon time period. This body count will be recorded on the Parish
Coordinator's Sunday attendance sheet provided in the Sacristy and on a slip
of paper in the wafer chalice in the rear of the church.
The ushers provide guidance and direction during the communion portion of
the Holy Eucharist, to church attendees, by directing them to the proper
communion rail area, at the appropriate time.
Ushers conclude their service responsibilities at the conclusion of the
10:15 a.m. service, by cleaning up the pew areas, i.e., by removing,
disposing of any remaining/discarded service bulletins, paper, food/candy
wrappers, etc., straightening out the contents of the pew racks, securing
the public address system (Ambo location), sanctuary alter and overhead
lights, closing windows (if required) and locking all Sanctuary and
vestibule lockable doors with Allen wrench key kept in vestibule cabinet.
Ushers normally arrive 15 to 30 minutes prior to the service beginning and
finish cleaning up 10 to 15 minutes after the conclusion of the service.
"Lost and Found" type items left in the Sanctuary pews are normally turned
in to the Parish Coordinator's office for safe keeping until either
reclaimed by owner or disposed by the Parish Coordinator in an appropriate
manner.
Unusable left over service bulletins are placed in a black tray bin provided
on the wooden counter in the main Sanctuary vestibule for use during the
following week for reference and information.
Ushers ring the church's main bell at the conclusion of the service and
dismissal by clergy and/or appointed service individual at the church's main
entrance as was done prior to the beginning of the service.
Bell ringing may be omitted depending on the type of service that ushers are
being utilized at, i.e., funerals, etc.
Ushers normally sit at the rear of the church during the service they are
supporting in order to better observe the service and provide any assistance
that clergy may require during the service. It also aids in performing the
body/attendance counting and if required, leaving the sanctuary for
additional counting and retrieving people and/or items required during the
service.
Ushers may also sit with their families during the service any where within
the sanctuary, if desired.
Any individual attending St. David's Episcopal Church and desiring to learn
how to usher, may sign up to usher on the sign up sheet posted on the far
left side of the bulletin board in the main Sanctuary Vestibule next to the
vestibule exit door facing west (river side). |
